War Room 3 - Trash Talk
Sep 4th, 2006, 8:59pm

 TRASH TALKERS

I suppose everyone likes to talk a little smack every now and then. Heck, even the worst players like to mix it up with the best even if it's all in fun.
Trash Talking comes from a position of power and in a certain aspect, a position of fear. Everyone at some point can boast of their skill level especially if you have the game to back it up. While one player told me the site wouldn't be the same without a little trash talking, I wondered what it would be like if there was no trash talking. Would players go through a sort of withdrawl without being able to spew a little zingers? Or would the site fade away into oblivion due to the lack of interest generated in the chat room?
Trash Talking does have positive attributes and can have an effect on a game. Suppose that you knew a certain player was in the Top 10 and you were not. You could start talking a little trash to get the Top 10 player interested in playing you. Or maybe he would ignore you as a horse ignores the annoying flys.
Either way I get bothered by the "rubbing it in" after a game. Especially by a player that , when he loses, leaves the game room without so much as a "gg". If the trash talker wins, he rubs it in. Especially painful is that most of the time, his "victims" are newer players or players that don't have a winning record.
Can trash talking be a good strategy or is it just poor taste?

Personally.......I don't think trash talking does anything for the game or for the site. (imagine the reaction of a new player, who has been playing only a few days......when he comes into contact with someone trash talking about him......calling him names and pulling him down.....this would hardly encourage the guy to register....would it?)

Ok......a little trash talking can be fun if the guy you are talking about an assole, who you don't respect. But all in all I think it is ugly and needless.
I try not to trash talk anyone....... although i have had to often defend myself from people's trash talking B.S.

To me...... I can't see any point in causing unnecessary bolllocks to anyone.
Luckily there are only a few players who tend to make trash talking a habit.

Personally.....any player who trys trash talking with me....in order to get a game.....would actually receive the exact opposite......I would just refuse to play them....fuk em. Of course .....if they asked in a resonable manner....they would probably get a game(time permitting....and as long as they had standard options on)
Bully-boy tactics....DO NOT work with me.....they may with other players....but not me.

A little bit is acceptable.....but i don't think it should be encouraged. At the end of the day......i think it would be better to encourage young players to play stratego......... Stratego is a game played from the ages of 10 years old and i think that should be in mind when discussing the topic of trash talking.

Obviously fpn supports trash talk.

I do to a certain point, for good humor, but after that it gets annoying.

For the record, I DON'T support trash talk. I have often said that rubbing it in after a game is not only bad for business but has no place in a game that is based on good sportsmanship. You may confuse trash talk with being critical. I am a very critical person but you'll never hear me trashing someone else after a game. As far as taking shots and ribbing people, like you for example, well that's not trash talking, that's simply pushing your buttons. Nothing personal.

Hey fpn,

Great posts, I love the war room post so far.

Not had a whole lot of time to weigh in on any yet but I'll take a rack at this one.

I think we really have two types of trash talk.

I personally really enjoy some mild trash talking when playing folks I know (as far as knowing oer the net goes) and have played many times before. Usually these folks know me and know my fun manored lingo. And an occasional "good luck, but I plan to whip your butt" goes off before the game with a laugh and chuckle.

Now again, another form of trash talk can come after the game. This is where some folks leave the good heartedness behind, and sometimes go overboard against new, or weak opponents. I could do without that.

Anyway, not much time to write much else.

Like I said, I enjoy the war room post.  8)

Yes another quality post. This is the first time I actually thought about the subject.

My favourite players to beat are the ones with a big mouth and a decent game. It can be painfull if you lose to them though as their talk normally goes up.

I remember a game against a player who called himself the best barrage player in the world. He kept talking and talking.

I didnt say much except 1-0 after the first ,2-0, 3-0 up till 4-0 when he went rather silent. After 4.5-0.5 (his first draw) suddenly he started to talk again, something like Im onto your game now. Guess i was paying less attention cause the first 4 were relatively easy and he learned more of my game than the other way round.

We have played many interesting games since.

Morx may be one the biggest trash talkers out there!

And this Morpheus alias name.

But nobody can EVER take the cake from Sadistic -- even when he loses he talks trash about how your game needs improvement (this is even without lotto).

Ok... I am confused here.  First of all, Morx is a trash talker ? ? ?

Always heard him be extremely polite so don't understand that one.

Next, what point are we trying to make about Morpheus?  Don't hear him much either.

Finally, what on earth is 'theman' referring to about Morx and UG trashing him ? ? ?  I know U G can and will defend himself whether it is 'theman' or someone else, but don't really remember Morx trashing anybody.  And if Morx or UG is trashing 'theman' then 'theman' must have really blew it b/c I missed the inference all together... or is someone feeling guilty.

Would think it is none of my business, but it is made public when you post it on the M.B. so now I wonder,

Just a couple of quick reminders please

* No personal attacks please. The idea of the War Room is to generate discussions in the hopes of advancing the game of our newer players and have a little bit of a friendly and healthy debate at the same time.

* Try and stay on topic. If the threads keep generating a direction of their own it defeats the purpose of the War Room.

Thanks to everyone for participating. Lots of views to these topics. If you have an idea for discussion let me know. Every Monday I'll update the War Room with a new topic for the group to eschew over.

Sorry FPN, don't want to clutter the thread but wanted to respond to 'theman'.   8)

I would have never have guessed either one was directing that specifically at you, prob. lots of other players that would fit that category.

Enough on that,   Grin

I know this thread hasn't been addressed in a while, but I believe it is worth dredging up again, because in recent days there seems to be an increase in moderate to bad players spouting off.
It is my opinion that unless a player is within 10 rating spots of his opponent, he doesn't have room to talk.  Everybody has the right to defend himself, but beating a good or great player once doesn't qualify anybody as good or great.  That said, Stratego is a game of psychological warfare as much as anything else.  I have watched several players lose a game to Sadness because they were afraid of him, even when they had an advantage.  Having the ability to intimidate an opponent is a powerful weapon, and completely fair.  I think Sun Tsu said that.
If a player has a garbage game, but still feels compelled to run their mouth, that is bothersome.  I said that.
Not too many people will be motivated to help a jackass.  But if anybody sees a new player getting trashed, offer support.  This site is thriving, and having a good mix of friendly players and not so friendly players is great for business and adds good drama.  I know there are many players out there willing to offer advice to newer players, and ultimately that will make everybody better.
Finally I will say, it's better to be bad winner and good player than a good loser and bad player, just as it's better to be a smartass than a dumbass.  And speaking of trash talk, my wife just expressed to me her opinion that all of us that love Stratego and this site are queer.  God bless her.  Smiley
