I know this thread hasn't been addressed in a while, but I believe it is worth dredging up again, because in recent days there seems to be an increase in moderate to bad players spouting off.
It is my opinion that unless a player is within 10 rating spots of his opponent, he doesn't have room to talk. Everybody has the right to defend himself, but beating a good or great player once doesn't qualify anybody as good or great. That said, Stratego is a game of psychological warfare as much as anything else. I have watched several players lose a game to
Sadness because they were afraid of him, even when they had an advantage. Having the ability to intimidate an opponent is a powerful weapon, and completely fair. I think Sun Tsu said that.
If a player has a garbage game, but still feels compelled to run their mouth, that is bothersome. I said that.
Not too many people will be motivated to help a jackass. But if anybody sees a new player getting trashed, offer support. This site is thriving, and having a good mix of friendly players and not so friendly players is great for business and adds good drama. I know there are many players out there willing to offer advice to newer players, and ultimately that will make everybody better.
Finally I will say, it's better to be bad winner and good player than a good loser and bad player, just as it's better to be a smartass than a dumbass. And speaking of trash talk, my wife just expressed to me her opinion that all of us that love Stratego and this site are queer. God bless her.
