Good job butt!  In my experience broccoli is hard to predict.  I've got some first year plants grown from seed back in the late winter, and one is producing a little bit, but the others are just leafy like you're seeing.  I think that's pretty typical to not expect much the first year.  How old are your plants?  You should feed it some high phosphorus fertilizer - that encourages flowering - as opposed to high nitrogen, which encourages leaf growth.

When a fertilizer has the three numbers like: X-Y-Z   phosphorus is the middle one.  So look for a 10-15-10 or something like that.   This type of fertilizer is good for any plant that develops produce from flowers, such as tomatoes, peppers, etc.

Finished the last spring pea, spinach, and lettuce harvest.  Now the place is taken over with summer crops like squash & tomatoes.  Got some potatoes growing in a cloth grocery bag as a test - so far so good.  one upside down hanging tomato too as another test.

Strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, and asparagus are first year and aren't producing much, but they're surviving the dry & relatively hot summer pretty well so far.

Just planted new peas & spinach seed for fall crop.

Squash & string beans & lettuce & onions are producing like crazy now.  Peas for fall crop & spinach are coming up & looking good.  Just planted some collards & cabbage seed.  Tomatoes are still green - it's getting down to the 40s now at night, I hope there's still time before 1st frost to get some good ones.

Good new recipe I modified off of Mother Earth News:

string beans
potatoes
onions

Chop into 1/4th & par boil potatoes.
Cut onions in to 1/4s or 1/8ths.
Cut ends off of string beans.
Potatoes, beans, onions in a big bowl with some olive oil & spices (salt, pepper, etc - whatever you like)
Shake.
Throw it all on the grill for 10-15 minutes.

Good stuff!

One of my best cabbages so far this year...

You can even grow potatoes in a container.  I used a canvas grocery bag.  On either side is a tomato plant in a container, doing quite nicely.

A cold frame can extend the season.  It's getting down to the 40s here now.  If we get a frost, these squash will die.  A tarp thrown over these 10' 1/4" PVC pipes will protect them overnight & let them grow a month or more longer than normal.  Of course cabbage & peas don't care, they actually enjoy a good chill.  Cheesy

Squash & beans under the cold frame skeleton - added another 2 ft wide as you can see, now planted with spinach & collard seed for fall/winter harvest.

Green bean city... this little patch is producing like crazy.

Tomato city.  It's actually smaller & greener than I would want this time of year, but a late May snow storm killed my early plants.  Hopefully there's time for these boys to put out some big reds.  A keen eye will catch the two grape vines in the background.   Wink

Next crop of spinach & peas & lettuce & radishes well on their way now.  If you live anywhere "normal" and you haven't planted your fall/winter crop yet... what are you waiting for?  Do it NOW!   Cheesy

as Cheech would say, 'but its GOOD sh1t, man'     Grin

On a serious note, Indiana is very fertile, but unfortunately I was never able to grow anything but 'that stuff'. Here in England, the growing season is too short, and fresh produce is just too readily available from all over the EU to bother with trying to grow anything. Besides, the back garden is way too small.

A question, however, your veiws on composting and using a closed system to generate methane? Garbage is, I think, the ultimate renewable natural resource, and I wish composting could be done on a larger scale. I did compost in Indiana, and once I got it going, I was actually producing my own 'garden soil', as good as 'Black Magic' or any other commercial potting soil.

Yes, I do composting to produce soil.  I don't try to capture the methane though.
