FIRST (YES, I AM SHOUTING) THE ORIGINAL SUBJECT WAS A 2012 TOURNY! But it has again turned into a pissy-fit over who is the best and blah, blah, (excuse me) and Blas.

Second, I apologize to Richard (UG) if he misunderstood. The 2011 was Underground's private tournament, because it was mainly Brits. Like 2010 was mainly Dutch and Deutch (sp?). What to do, what to do?

Quote from Devilsmacker on Apr 8th, 2012, 11:39pm:
In all seriousness, the idea of a real world champion is probably a pipe dream unless the tournament was advertised for a year and played online, one day, winner take all.  That way you could link together the various good players.  A serious of qualifying tournaments could be held in each country to determine seedings, and a swiss system could be used to determine a champion.  Other than that you will never get all the good players in one spot.

Wonderful idea. But lets go one step further:

Take this as a way of determining a NATIONAL champion. A small entry fee could be collected from each player. THAT money would go to basic travel expense for the National Winners to compete IN PERSON against all the other National Winners.

Surely some way (let's ask Chip) to allow competitions to be on Meta, with (a)no meta membership required, but (b) ONLY for the individual National Titles. (like those robot championships?) This would allow smaller countries to not only compete for a National Title, but by pooling all the entry fees and ONLY using those entry fees for travel (basic economy class fares) to the in-person final tournament.

This would, of course, mean everyone involved would have to GIVE and make an effort to do it right, (and considering the greed and avarice in the world, probably never happen), but............

Consider that a video could be made of the competition, and uploaded to Youtube. OR, some network like Fox Sports or C-span, CNN, could televise it. Why not? Perhaps it might stimulate interest in Stratego, either newcomers to the game, or some of those many 'Gee, I played that when I was a Kid, I didn't know it was still around'.

This comment from the Son of the South:

HTRN said, My question is, is this a real WORLD championship? is it sanctioned by ISF do they run it does any other group give it  legitimacy? Or is it a bumch of stratego geeks (i include myself and all admin and mods in that category)  playing at a group setting. I ask because I really do not know.
If the answer is yes it is legit than there should be different region champs europe, North America Asia etc thaen one championship played each year with the winners from these regions in the tourney. Otherwise it is not a true World championship.

As for ISF sanction, is that necessary? A World Champion is still a World Champion regardless of sanctioning body. And, with this in mind, wouldn't the ISF WANT to help (or lose the 'franchise'?) Just what contract does JUMBO have with the ISF? Jumbo is a Dutch country, but Pim (lighty) is also Dutch and a many times world champion.............

Maybe a new organisation, the Confederated Stratego Association (CSA?) would work as a sanctioning body.....

If you want a fun place to have the in-person competition, come to my village. I will supply food, shelter, and a place for competion (with tables and chairs).

Don't know if that helps, or if I am even understood. Love you all, and love this game.

So that last post was on the 19th, and no reply yet. Interesting that the post was about 2012. It devolved into a shouting match about who was a BETTER player, culminating in a challenge and a bet: $200 via paypal to Chip?
Really, now.
Then I make a proposal about implementing a system to get the 2012 tourney going, and there were no replies....

And the bloody mods and admins didn't step in and relegate the postings about the 'who was better' digression to the Challenge Forum.

WTF?

Actually it was mainly Dutch and German players just like 2010 and 2009.
The participation from British players was dissapointing. We had more British players at the last British National Championships than at the World Championships.
All the hard work finding sponsirship in the thousands of pounds and all the work setting everything up, so British players could participate and only a handful turn up. Certainly it was not done for me. I would travel to wherever it is held. It was held in the UK to help encourage the Brits to participate and they stayed at home.  Sad

Dear Richard,
I was not aware of the disappointing participation of British players. Like you, I would have expected Brits to be in the majority.
Perhaps, then, IF the WC was held in the US, would more than a handful of US players show?

It is most telling that Dutch and German players are the most avid of Stratego players, and may explain why 'that other site' (which is German) enjoys the success it does......and why you choose to play there, which is understandable under these parameters.

There was a tournament, last Autumn in New York City. I know several Germans who travelled across the Atlantic to participate. Not sure if any Dutch attended the tournament, but I don't think there was a great deal of Americans enter.
I may be wrong.......but I am sure if there was, they would be shouting out this fact. Also.....I never saw any tournament ranked in the official rankings which means there must have been less than 7 players, because if there was 7 or more it could have been ranked.  Sad

It would great to see more American tournaments and more Americans entering Stratego events.
A WC in America would be great? I would love to travel over and combine a Stratego WC with some sightseeing. Smiley
But for this to happen the USA needs to start organising tournaments and trying to get players to travel to these events.
Other than joining ISF, the only other major thing is to find the sponsorship/funding to pay for the WC.
Get these 3 things and the dream would become reality.

I would love to see more US activity.  I renewed the domain strategousa.org, and it this point it is a wiki with a bunch of information, mostly related to the Metaforge tournaments.  I think any US stratego organization needs to be independent of Metaforge, though, so I do not think it is appropriate for me to claim to run it or anything like that.  Since it is a wiki, anyone can step forward and start creating pages and organizing national tournaments.  I'd be happy to help to some extent.  Maybe I'm wrong though - maybe Metaforge should lead the Stratego USA charge?  I don't know...

However, I don't think the new US stratego licensee, Spin Master, would be too happy with us using "their" licensed word.  Since they already threatened to sue me and caused the Brigade name change & associated graphics changes, I doubt they would play nice with Metaforge.

I like sauce's idea of doing it online in the meantime.  The hell with them that way, it's just a BRIGADE tournament - lol.

Also, I'd love to attend the WC this year, but I bet they'd throw me in the clink & I'd be on trial in The Hague due to SOPA, PIPA, or whatever copyright treaty it is now that our assclown in chief is trying to sign.  Wink
