What is your most hated style of game play? (Read 430 times)

Personally, mine is the trading game. When your opponent manages to get a few low pieces up on you early in the game (Like 2 lieutenants or 2 seargeants) and finishes the game off by trading. -Boss

I agree with McLovin about the overly defensive players who force you to be the only one taking a risk.

I think it would also be nice in this thread for players to share how to beat these "hated" styles of play. For example, with regard Boss’ post about the player who is up a few low pieces and wants to just trade down, you can make this hard to do by keeping your marshal unseen as long as possible. Meanwhile use your information advantage (you will have likely seen at least a couple captains in losing your low pieces) to try to even up the score. Also, don’t move any pieces more than you have to. This helps avoid being forced into a trade when a dominant piece is in threatening in your territory. Any other thoughts on this one? Anyone have a good strategy to beat the “dancing queen”?

There is only one style I hate the most...this one is easy. Lotto addicts.

No skill, no thought. Just send the Marshall into the first rank blindly and hope for the best. These people are the scum of the earth. Maybe they have a drinking problem or a brain the size of a thimble. I detest assholes like this because they destroy the integrity of the game (the thrill of the strategy if you will). It really makes me want to ask for my money back.

I would never dream of doing this in my own games, because i really appreciate the defensive struggle and precise maneuvering it takes to outwit your opponent. I love long games because it takes advantage of my patient style and appreciation for every piece in my army.

I think lotto, as a whole, should be banned, and at the very least identifying an unknown piece with a scout should be an accepted practice. Cause you know if someone is willing to send their 1 into the front ranks naked, they will soon be sending a 2 and 3 and 4 as well. Utterly idiotic and aggravating.

Thank you for taking the time to listen to my thoughts on this. Its a big burden off my chest and I hope you players out there (you know who you are) who utilize this style will change your ways.

The best way to beat a defensive player who shuffles and refuses to advance nary a scout past the lakes is with an unadulterated lotto.

Send the Marshall, naked, on move 1, into the front row of your enemy and see how much longer this constipated douche bag shuffles his pieces. The moment he falls down a 7 and a 9 from his front row, send a major right behind and mercilessly plow ahead. He will be so off balance that you will be forcing him to counterattack for fear of being completely emasculated as a girly-girl.

Lotto is a great way to play stratego and I personally embrace it whenever I get the chance. It requires a lot of skill and makes the games exciting and fast. A defensive player can really get rattled when you blitzkrieg his shuffling ass right out of the gate. At least now you play the game on your terms.

Thank you for listening to my ideas on this. I think it is important to be consistent in whatever your approach is, and stick to it.

Haha...quite contradicting Devil, but some good points. Wink

I agree with Xerxes and McLovin...the dancing is truly aggravating! But it seems that I have encountered more "Traders" than I have "Dancers". And I also think it would be a great idea to post some helpful tips on how to react to these types of game play. I have a few players in mind that I would love to try some new moves on! Grin

any style that results in me losing. which is just about all of them.

stalling and shuffling are far and away the most pathetic displays on the stratego board.

as far as trading goes - trading usually takes 2 to tango. if you dont want to trade down, dont make it an option. making it harder to trade can force your opponent out of position, and open up attacking lanes.
